Gaza starves as Israel invades!

Palestinian militiamen are battling to stave off Israeli troops and armour advancing into the Gaza Strip in a Zionist offensive that began last weekend. Some 15 Israeli troops have been killed by the partisans and many more wounded in fierce fighting in the north of the densely populated Palestinian enclave under a blanket siege and day and night bombing that has taken a terrible toll in the lives of the civilian population.

On the Buses

Bus services were nationalised by the post-war Labour Government, largely to the delight of well-compensated owners who were glad to be absolved of the work. This correspondent is old enough to recall bus services before privatisation and their deregulation in Scotland. When deregulation took place in the mid-1980s a bus queue was for a while literally a queue of buses looking for passengers, and bus races race took to pick up passengers from popular bus stops while other areas became bus deserts.
